Making it their own.

LaSalle

Oakland, California | 2022

This family spent many years in a dated house dreaming about one day making it their own. The time finally came when the vision was put to paper. The house was completely gutted and rebuilt to reflect their modern and clean aesthetic while also updating all the antiquated infrastructure.

Architect: Tabarly Stewart

We combined 3 small rooms to make this large multi-functional living space that serves 3 important purposes. An expansive dual sink kitchen, a family eating area and a “catch all” for the back staircase from street level garage.

Doing a complete house renovation can be very costly. In our experience the most economical path is to redesign the interior space while maintaining the existing exterior footprint. The architect and homeowners found creative layout solutions that resulted in what feels like a new house even though we didn’t alter or expand the existing square footage.

The design intention was modern and clean incorporating 3 basic elements…rift sawn oak (floors, windows and casework) marble counters and smooth white walls.

The upper floor has the kid’s bedrooms, bathroom and family room. Because its situated almost 40 feet above the street, the windows look out to the tops of the neighborhood trees and allows for great natural light. The custom casework and guardrails tie it back into the main floors design concept.

The floating stair treads connect the main floor to the upper floors. Eliminating the stair risers allows for light to pass through to the master suite situated in the back of the house connecting the spaces.

Originally this house was worked on by the homeowner, who’s primary goal seemed to be to execute as cheaply as possible sacrificing quality, functionality and most importantly any regard for aesthetics. Part of the joy of this job was the chance to exploit the talents of our carpenters who took great pride in the execution of so many custom wood details.

All the new bathrooms incorporate walk in showers with floor to ceiling shower glass that opens the spaces.
